☝️ James Treadway on why he created

"Make Them Feel Seen" ☝️

"I wanted to tell you that so far Ben has been thriving in his first week at college. I barely hear from him because he is spending time with new friends.

He actually told me he saw a girl at one of the organized events. She seemed as socially uncomfortable at the event as he did, and he actually went over and started talking. They became fast friends. I do believe that his work with your course gave him the confidence to do that 😊"

"My son would dismiss me or walk away from a conversation, or slam the door in my face, and I would just get really angry and sad. But even after just the first session or two, he already started to open up.

Keep an open mind. Some of it sounds like it's not gonna work, but try it anyway. It worked for me!"

"It's been night and day since learning this. I was a very close father with my kids, and I was actually sad that I didn't have that anymore. It was getting bad to the point where, I'd yell at [my teenage son], he'd yell and we'd kind of go back and forth.

And that doesn't happen anymore. These little Jedi mind tricks that we learned... it's just a total different realm now. He greets me when I come in the house He offers to help. He asks my wife if she wants to get lunch. That didn't used to happen."

How I Changed My Life by Making Others Feel Seen

My name is James Treadway, I'm 40 as of this writing, and like so many do, I used to suffer terribly from anxiety, depression, and social insecurity growing up.

I couldn't figure out how some of my peers seemed so confident when I was constantly doubting myself, worrying if I was good enough, and wondering how to "do it right" when it came to socializing.

In high school, I was so shut down that I went two years without talking to my parents at the dinner table each night, even though it was just the three of us.

Finally, in my late 30s, after attending more seminars, reading more books, and spending more hours in coaching and therapy than anyone I knew, I realized a solution to my conversational: make the other person feel seen.

It's a skill I call "acknowledgment." When you acknowledge someone, you show them that you see them, with care, just as they are. It can be the tiniest gesture to make, yet so often it seems to mean the world to people.

Acknowledgments changed my life. As a parent, I became someone my kids (a 6yo son and 13yo daughter) are dying to spend time with - yes, even my teenage daughter. When they're acting "difficult" as other parents would see it, I shine, and revel in making them feel seen and heard in the most sensitive times.

My son's kindegarten teacher reflected to me, "I have never had a 5yo boy show the emotional vocabulary that your son has, and I credit that to you," she said to me, shocking me.

In personal conversations, I stopped worrying and started getting curious what it was like to be the people I was speaking to. And how can I show them that I see them?

I began making friends more easily than ever, while feeling joyful - simply by giving each person I spoke to the gift of feeling seen by me. And there were so many ways to do it.

I started sharing this insight with clients, and they came back to me telling me it was "a superpower." Acknowledgment was changing their lives, too.

Meanwhile, I had been an SAT tutor for twenty years, and as I got to know Gen Z better, I realized how much social anxiety, insecurity, and basic skills of relating to others were major problems for them, too.

Imagine not worrying about your future anymore: whether you'll make truly good friends or not, impress the people who will open life-changing doors for you, have confidence in yourself, or enjoy deeply successful relationships.

In the last two decades, I spent $1.5 million of my own income on workshops, retreats, coaching, and therapy to arrive at the insights that make this class so effective.

Yes, it's crazy. But it will be to your benefit!

I invested this time and money into solving these problems SO THAT YOU WON'T HAVE TO!

We're only going to need a month, at 3.5 minutes per day, to get the results that took me two decades to achieve.

I can't wait to share this journey with you!

Teens Want to Be More Extroverted - But Can't Stop Looking at Their Phones!

What I noticed about teens' social skills while volunteering at a teen leadership camp the past six summers:

Almost 90% of the kids at camp each summer seem to show up with the same goal: they wanted better social skills. They wanted to be "more extroverted."

Yet when lunchtime or other down moments in the day arrived, kids didn't go up to each other and start conversations.

They stared down at their phones and scrolled emptily, each one alone from the others.

I sensed these kids wanted to engage with each other, but they had no idea where to start! They felt nervous, and awkward, and simply hid in the familiarity of their own world and phone.

Remember the Google study on "psychological safety" that I mentioned above? They didn't know how to check in with each other and let the other know, "you're OK as you are. You're safe with me" - the thing that each of them was dying to feel from someone else!

So they stayed stuck in their lonely bubbles, and God knows how much suffering this was creating for them back home at high school and college!

Think of how many kids are on anxiety or depression medication right now, their problems hugely fueled by the pain and insecurity of their social lives.

Rewind back to the leadership camp this past summer: there was one girl on my team of 25 teens who broke the mold: she would casually walk up to the other kids on her team and simply say, "how's it going?"

And whatever the kids would answer, she would engage with!

And of course, by the end of the week, it was SHE who was named "Leader of the Week!"

As far as I could tell, the only thing she did that others didn't was to check in with the people around her and relate to what they shared!

Whether she knew it or not, she was a master at acknowledging! She was a leader. And she seemed to be one of the happiest kids at the camp.

THIS is the shift your teen will start to experience: becoming the safe person in the room. Becoming the one who makes others feel seen and accepted as they are.

And don't think it's just other peers whom this matters to. It's EVERY human being in their lives, regardless of age or culture: teachers, bosses, family members, etc.

I've lived in London, Beijing, Colombia, Serbia, and many places in the US, and everywhere I've been, humans respond to acknowledgment with the exact same gratitude and appreciation. It's deeply rooted in our biology.

Not only will you you see a major shift in how your child interacts with peers and mentors - you'll see a NOTICEABLE change in how they interact with YOU!

For the first time, your teen will ask, "how are you, Mom?" or "how are you, Dad?" - and genuinely care about your answer!

This is the type of social habit that doesn't just change friend group dynamics, or the trajectory of your kid's career path in life - it will change your family, too.

Parents Miss Teens' Signals, Leading to Connection Breakdown

What I've noticed raising a teen of my own and coaching parents in how to reconnect with their teen

One of the most important metaphors in parenting is the stoplight: in any moment with your teen, are you getting a "red light," "yellow light," or "green light" response?

A "red light" is their getting triggered, agitated, and shutting down. Clearly, they are telling you to "stop!" Parents failing to connect with their teen are usually neglecting to stop at their teens' red lights. They plow into conversations "for the teenager's own good!" despite the fact that the teen is clearly communicating, "NOT NOW."

A "yellow light" is an ambivalent response, while a "green light" is saying, "yes! Tell me more!" With teens, it can seem like the green lights never come anymore, and that can feel heartbreaking and frustrating as a parent.

Teenagers WILL give parents green lights for what parents want to speak about, however, IF they feel safe and seen by that parent. And one of the key ways to show your teen you see them is to honor their red lights and don't push further on that topic - not then, at least.

A further critical skill in parenting conversations is what FBI hostage negotiator Chris Voss calls the "accusation audit," in which you say the worst thing the other person could think about what you're about to say up front, before saying anything else.

To my 13-year-old daughter I'll say, before saying something she might find preachy and annoying, "I'm going to say something extremely annoying and preachy - can I?"

With that intro, and knowing that I honor her red lights when she gives me them, my daughter basically always feels safe to say, "sure, go ahead!"

There's my greenlight :) and now I can say the thing to her that I wanted to.

Her mom still struggles with honoring her red lights, so my daughter closes down much more in her presence.

Making sense? Wanting to learn more? Then join me in 1:1 coaching or taking the "Make Them Feel Seen" video course.

Colleagues Constantly Miss Opportunities to Make Clients, and Each Other, Feel Seen

What I notice every time I enter a workplace

In a book I was reading last year, the author describes how he realized that when he used the line with coworkers, "you're feeling _____, and that makes sense because _____," his career rapidly took off.

Suddenly, everyone in the office wanted him around! He started getting invited to especially important meetings, and promoted!

Well, who doesn't want to be told that they make sense? How many of us feel like nobody understands, at least a lot of the time?

And it isn't just colleagues who are craving to feel seen - it's clients, too.

As someone who loves to get work done in cafes, I'm constantly struck by cafe employees' failure to make customers feel seen in their brief interactions at the register and drink counter.

Who wouldn't return faithfully to a cafe where they feel particularly seen by the staff?

Think back to your favorite teacher growing up - I'll be shocked if it wasn't the teacher by whom you felt most uniquely seen and appreciated.

You probably learned more in that learning environment than in any other class, too.

It sounds hyperbolic to say, but learning to inject your interactions with the skill of making others feel seen and heard will change every part of your life, work included.

"I pay attention now to how I show up for everyone. Especially my daughter. My relationship with her is so much better. Because in the end we don’t have to like the same things. She just wants to be heard :) and acknowledged :) It makes her so happy.

Now she comes home and says, ‘this is what happened! This is what happened!’ Now, I listen! Instead of cutting her off! I used to be short with her! And now, when I tell her about my work, she actually gives me the 5 minutes of undivided attention, and she listens!”

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: Will there be homework?

In James' interactive 1:1 course, he assigns students three minutes a day of quizzing themselves on key slides from the previous session.

In the video course, students have prompts for reflection/journaling after each lesson.

In both classes, reviewing key material daily keeps the content top-of-mind as students go through their day, so they're more likely to notice key themes in their daily life and practice the key techniques.

Q: $2,495 for the 1:1 class with James - isn't that a lot of money for a course that isn't about school?

Yes, yet "Social Skills for Life" - and this will sound like crazy exagerration - is likely to be the most life-changing class they ever take.

To a large degree, school teaches skills and knowledge that we don't use later in life.

Yet in Social Skills for Life or the "Make Them Feel Seen" video course, you will emerge with a self-awareness, groundedness, confidence, and social skill that will last the rest of your life. It won't just alter your career trajectory and the opportunities you're offered by people who want to work with you. It will make your personal relationships deeply fulfilling and successful, too. It will certainly make you a better partner and parent one day.

If you could guarantee these lifelong results - and spare yourself the expenses of therapies, coaching, medication, and addictive behaviors that all stem from insecurities and anxiety - for less than three grand, would you do so?

That is what these classes deliver.

Q: How does your money-back guarantee work?

You can quit the class at any time and have the balance of the class refunded to you, based on how much you completed. And if you believe the classes didn't offer you value, we'll refund you for the entire cost.

Q: Why do you teach the interactive class 1:1 instead of in groups?

We used to offer Social Skills for Life to groups of three and four students at a time, but gradually we realized that the one-on-one students were achieving deeper breakthroughs and realizations than the group class students.

Students who didn't know each other were much less likely to share vulnerably about themselves over Zoom in front of others.

Q: I'm not really into "personal growth." Is this class for me?

As amazing as the class is, it requires a student who's willing to face their fears and limitations in an honest way and apply themselves to the material to discover how it works for them.

If you don't seem ready to do that, then this isn't the class for you.

If you ARE ready to approach the class in a committed and vulnerable way, then signing up will be one of the best decisions you've ever made.

Q: My son/daughter struggles with anxiety in general - will this class help?

Resolving anxiety is the theme of Part 2 in James' interactive 1:1 class.

Meanwhile, learning to make others feel seen and heard, the topic of the video course and Part 1 of the interactive course, will dramatically lower social anxiety, raise confidence, and thus ease overall anxiety as well.

What You Get When You Buy "Make Them Feel Seen"!
